To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee (Chapter 24)

In Chapter 24, Aunt Alexandra invited over her missionary circle. These groups of ladies talked very formerly about their beliefs, but what they were saying was very contradictory. Mrs. Merriweather talked about how she believed in forgiving and forgetting at the beginning of the meeting. At the same time she discusses how Helen needs to be encouraged to act better even though her husband supposedly committed a crime. The ladies continue on this subject for a while even when they say they forgive and forget. They still talk down about black men as if they are all evil and no girl is safe. If they truly forgave blacks for their crimes, then the ladies would not be discussing this at all.
Then Mrs. Merriweather discusses how blacks are all born hypocrites. She does not give a good example of this, but only goes on saying at least they do not have this sin. The white women are being hypocritical because they say they forgive people when really they just say that to make themselves feel like they are not doing anything wrong. Really they are the hypocrites for saying they believe one thing but act out another.
