It was holiday season and everyone was happy and getting along. On a cold winter day, lights and ornaments were being hung onto the tall, fat Christmas tree while joyful music played loudly though speakers standing along the wall. All of a sudden, the phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. The fourth time it rang, I ran to the closest phone and answered. The cold phone pressed next to my ear, and I could hear little sobs on the other side. As I say hello, the unknown person quietly sobbing though the phone asks for my mom. My mom answers, her face is blank. No expression as if someone had just passed away. I had a confused and curious look on my face, but I continued to hang lights around our tree. The phone was put down, and my mom made everyone stop what they were doing and get ready to leave like a fire was happening right then and there. Scarves and jackets are thrown in the air, people running around like ants going into their hill, and my mom still standing with a blank face. We rushed into the car, shoving each other inside. My dad drove the car through freeways and streets as if he were in a race.
An hour passed and everyone was still unsure about what was happening. We arrived at my cousins house. Opened the door and faces new and old surround the room holding onto one person. As I walked though the doors, I hear cries and comforting words floating around the living room and kitchen. Someone yelled, "everyone come sit in the room." It was warm with the body heat and from the heater that was on. From that point on, it was so silent, you can drop a pin on the floor and it can be heard. Minutes passed, until every single person in the room was informed about what is going on. Everyone's faces dropped, it was dead silent, and shock filled the room. People, big and small, were speechless. The room started to break out with noises; people dropped to their knees, wailing, and questions were to be heard. At that moment, we found out my cousin has cancer and she only has a few months to live. From that moment, things changed in our family. People got closer and united. After a year passed, my cousin is still living and strong.
