Two.

In my opinion, think it's good that Calpurnia brought Scout and Jem to her church. They were able to see life at a different point of view, at a different perspective. Despite the poverty going on, there's a little light. Even though the church is not painted and they can't afford enough hymnal for everyone, it brought the people close together and in a way, they became stronger. They had some hope. There's a lot of themes in this book and I think hope is one of them.

Scout is also starting to see the other side of things. She's starting to see the truth behind what's happening. She sees the lives of two different people and how they act. For example, Calpurnia acts and talks differently with people at church and the family she serves. Aunt Alexandra acts different from how Calpurnia acts. She has a sophisticated air to her.

As I read on more to the book I start to see, i think what is the main theme. There are a lot of themes in this book.

I agree that Scout is seeing starting to see both sides of things and hopefully she can recognize which one side is the true side. She also notices that Atticus is the same both at work and home.

I don't like Aunt Alexandra, she's too sophisticated and kills the fun.

    Happy Reading :)

  2. Hey Francesca,
i just read your post and i totally agree with you :). The act of Calpurnia bringing Scout and Jem to her church helped change the perspectives of Jem and Scout. And i like how you speculated that Scout sees the different personalities within people.

However you dont answer the question of how, and why? For example, what is Scout and Jems different perspective? Why is this change significant? What are the themes you see?

For me, the significance of Calpurnia bringing them to her church is that now, Jem and Scout are plunged into this black society. Within this society, they begin to realize that "innocence" is within everybody. They begin to realize that the black community is different than what everyone else perceived it to be. Through this black society, i begin to realize more on why the story is called "to kill a mockingbird." We are all mocking birds, we are all innocent. But poeple kill this innocence because of prejudice and racism. Is that a theme of the story? I think so. PLease reply if you have any objections.

all in all, great post =]. I like your insight and your thoughts. Just make sure you explore the themes in the story in a more profound way.
